Walter Nickerson was born November 7, 1900 in Southside Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. Walter was raised by his grandparents Moses and Theodosia Nickerson. Walt held various jobs such as fisherman and as a cabin boy on the ship SS Canadian Volunteer. Walter immigrated to the U.S. via Vermont to see his sister Mildred (aunt - that's another story) where he met and married Bertha Hedlundh January 9, 1923 in Everett, Mass..

Walter resided in Lynn, Mass where he worked as a moulder for G.E. in West Lynn. Walter came from a large family and following traditions he fathered ten children - 6 girls and 4 boys. Walter passed from natural causes and is buried near his wife in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn, Mass.



About Walter



When Walter was growing up he was under the impression that Moses and Theodosia where his parents. It was later in life when he was married, that he found out that they where his grandparents and his sister Addie was actually his mother. This came as a shock as he felt he was abandon by Addie and never spoke to her again. There is no paper trail available showing his birth, adoption by his grandparents or any church documentation.

Walter came to America via Vermont when he was 21 with $70 in his pocket to visit Mildred his sister(aunt) in Mass where he secured a job and met his future wife Bertha Hedlund.

The purpose of this website is to collect any addition/corrections to his genealogy. Specially identifying who his father was and who was Bertha's biological parents.






Bertha Nickerson

Born in Warren, Mass on September 23, 1902 as Bertha May Oaks. Her biological mother was Mary Oaks and her grandmother was Nancy Oaks. Bertha was adopted December 1, 1906 by Emil John Hedlundh and Anna Molander in Cambridge, Mass. She was renamed  Bertha Marguerite Hedlundh. Bertha met Walter thru his sister/aunt Mildred and fell in love.
